Dog-Trot Getaway | Vacation | Rental on Historic Boggy Creek Farm

We welcome you to enjoy a very unique getaway experience at Austin's Original Urban Farm. Think Agritourism w/ fine accommodations on this beautiful 5 acre working farm!

Located in the heart of Central East Austin, we are just 2 miles east of the state capitol & downtown. We are 7 miles west of Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

Our Texas Dog-Trot style duplex was inspired by the 1844 home of Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas.

The Trot was beautifully built by our beloved Larry Butler, and his talented friends. They salvaged and milled a great deal of wood from trees damaged during the 2011 Bastrop fires as well as trees lost due to severe drought the same year at our other farm in Milam County. This beautiful wood can be seen throughout the house.

The house is dressed w/ long front and back porches and a wide breezeway that  separates the two units. Each unit boasts two bedrooms w/ generous closets (double/queen in one unit and queen/queen in the other unit),  full bathroom w/ shower (no tub), fully equipped kitchen, pantry & full-sized refrigerator. The kitchen is open to the living room. Other amenities include washing machine/dryer, Wifi, TV w/ ROKU. Parking on the property and more.

Imagine a more simple time as you enjoy a cup of coffee or crack pecans while rocking on the porch. Watch the farmers work in the field or harvest for the market which is held at the on-site farmstand W | TH | F | S,  8am-1pm.

Explore the grounds, visit the chickens who live their entire lives happily on the farm. See the original farmhouse, built over the winter of 1840/1841. Sam Houston, first President of the Republic of Texas, was a guest here at a wedding supper in 1841 during his second term.

East Austin is where the action is and it is loaded with amazing restaurants. We are happy to offer suggestions; many of Austin's top chefs shop at our farm stand regularly!

New & Developing: Historic Legacy Dinners | Chef Farm to Table Dinner Parties

At Boggy Creek Farm we offer a very unique and intimate dining experience.

Some of the possible settings for your special dinner party are:

  • Legacy Dinner Party in the Old James Smith Farm House. The home was completed over the winter of 1840/41; it is one of the two oldest homes in Austin and President of Texas, Sam Houston, attended a wedding supper here in December of 1841 while serving his 2nd presidential term. He pronounced the 'eating doings' as 'first rate throughout!' To set the mood, guests may enjoy a special happy hour tour of the historic home as the chef works on the first rate eating doings!

  • Dinner Party at the Republic of Texas Dog-Trot. The Trot house was inspired by the 1844 home of Dr. Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas. This house, with its expansive covered porches and breezeway, is able to accommodate larger groups.  Dinner on the Trot is a magical experience!

  • Spinach Capital Dinner. When the weather is lovely, why not set up tables in the midst of the crops, maybe even the spinach. Did you know that in the early 1900s Austin was the spinach capital of the country? The Colorado River Valley's silty soil provided the perfect nutrients for growing succulent spinach.  Austin's spinach was sent all over the country by train. The Old James Smith Place, aka Boggy Creek Farm, has always grown vegetables but in 1935 the farm was much larger than it is today, and a great deal of it was a spinach farm!

You may arrange to have your favorite chef plan your desired menu for your special afternoon or evening dinner party or we may even be able to have one of our fabulous chefs who regularly shops for produce at the farm treat you to an unforgettable multi-course, locally sourced meal.

All dinners may have the opportunity to begin with a happy hour docent-led tour of the 1841 farm house or a field and farm tour.
